The purchase of Yayoi Kusama’s oil painting in 1998 was the starting point of Ryutaro Takahashi’s collection of contemporary artworks. Since then, Mr. Takahashi has continued to collect Kusama’s artworks.
In this exhibition, a series of ‘infinity net’ in different mediums – oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache and prints – can be seen, including “No. 27″ 1997 the red oil painting that initiated the collection; “INFINITY-NETS [BBAT]” 2008 an acrylic painting; and “Nets Obsession” 1950′s – 1964 gouache on paper.
Though Kusama is better known for her vivid ‘polka dots’ series today, she also has been producing works expressed softly in ink, watercolor and pastel such as “Star” 1954. This work is remarkable for it is created before Kusama moved to the U.S. in 1957. This show presents several watercolor, ink and pastel on paper works from the 1950′s, as well as collages from the 1970′s when she returned to Japan.
Also in the exhibition are several sculptural works, such as “Accumulation of Hands” 1980 sofas that is covered by numerous silver work gloves; “STATUE OF VENUS OBLITERRATED BY INFINITY NETS (Y)” 1998 a combination of a painting and the statue of Venus covered by a painted net; and “Mirror Room No. 3″ 1964-86.
Please enjoy Yayoi Kusama’s world, comprised of about 28 artworks, from early to recent periods, in oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolor, ink, pastel, gouache, collage, etching and in sculptural form.
About Yayoi Kusama:
This contemporary artist who Japan is proud to present to the world was born in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture in 1929. She has been drawing since adolescence, a practice based on her hallucinatory experiences of seeing the world covered by polka-dots and hearing the voices of animals and plants.
She studied Nihon-ga at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts from 1948. Her first solo show was in 1952. In 1957 she moved to the U.S. all alone. Her monochromatic infinity net paintings attracted much attention, and she exhibited works that are in the vanguard of today’s installation art, such as the ‘soft sculpture’ objects covered by protuberances; works using illuminations; and mirror covered rooms. She sent out messages to the world through ‘happenings’ that linked with the hippie movement and the anti-war movement. Joining European avant-guarde art movements such as the Zero Group and Null, she was called the “Queen of the Avant-Guarde”.
Since her return to Japan in 1973, she has been actively creating paintings, prints, sculptures, installations, performances, novels and poetry. A retrospective was held at Center for International Contemporary Arts (CICA), New York in 1989. She represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 1993. A large traveling retrospective was held at the Los Angeles County Museum, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, U.S.A.), and Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo between 1998-99. And a traveling solo exhibition mainly with installation art was held at Consortium (Dijon, France), Maison de la culture du Japon `a Paris, Art Sonje Center (Seoul, Korea). In 2004, “KUSAMATRIX” was held at the Mori Art Museum (Tokyo) and Sapporo Sculpture Garden Museum. Another retrospective exhibition was held at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and traveled to 4 museums in Japan.
Her career in joining international exhibitions is boundless, being always at the edge of time, showing artworks all over the world.
