“Takahashi Collection†will start Naoya Hatakeyama’s exhibition “Slow Glass†on October 13, 2007. The title “Slow Glass†is inspired by the imaginary material, “the glass that slows the velocity of light†in a novel “Other Days, Other Eyes” by Bob Shaw, a science fiction novelist.
When you look into the glass you can see a scene from the past. So the story goes, with Slow Glass you can enjoy a beautiful landscape which has been stored in it, in the privacy of your city apartment. A piece of broken Slow Glass which has recorded a crime may be used as evidence in court. But it seems to me that within our sophisticated society this kind of function is already realized in a wide variety of recording methods.
The story goes on to tell of the misery that is caused when the past invades someone’s mind as a persistent memory. This is also a familiar experience in modern life because all our memories are stored for us in technological media and not in our minds. The enormous quantity of this material makes us uneasy. Our age is illuminated by all kinds of light from the past which shines into the darkest corners. It is like an interior architectural space completely glazed in Slow Glass. There is no shade; everything is cruelly bright.
Naoya Hatakeyama
We hope you enjoy this exhibition of color print art; an infinite numbers of images reflected in myriad polka dots of raindrops, dim and mysterious scenes through glasses that create refracting light.
